Dave Vander Maas
Location: Seattle, WA
Medium: Acrylic on Found Materials
Bio: Born and raised in various towns in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Dave was introduced to many art forms early on through school and seeking on his own. Art and expression through art became a bigger part of his life with the introduction of BMX, skateboarding and punk rock. At this time the independent spirit and DIY ethic became very influential. With the introduction of homemade graphics and zines, the idea of doing it all yourself was easier to comprehend than ever before. Since high school, Dave has received an Associates Degree in Graphic Design and a Certificate in Photography. He went on to drop out of a four-year institution to work as Art Director for Terrible One in Austin TX, then moved to Portland and completed his B.S. in Graphic Design at University of Portland in the summer of 2008. Since then, he's been freelancing and painting. Dave currently lives in Seattle, where he continues to paint and skate.
Statement: "I’m influenced by BMX and skateboarding and their respective cultures. I make art as a means to deal with whatever is going on in everyday life. My subjects are mostly symbolic and left open for interpretation by the viewer. My art is usually done in acrylic on found wood."
